The Journey
I've spent most of my career as a film producer. Eventually I found myself drawn to making films with actual purpose and social impact, projects I believed in, stories with the power to move people. But believing in something and being changed by it are different things. This project changed me, made room for what I can only call grace.
Most projects, even the ones I loved, eventually loosened their grip. Mary, the mother of Jesus, followed me home. For seventeen years, as I worked to bring her story to the screen, I developed a practice I came to call "MarynatingTM": the intentional process of immersing myself in Mary's virtues, compassion, and wisdom, allowing her example to infuse and transform my own journey.
Like marinating transforms ingredients by slowly absorbing flavor, soaking in her stories of humility, grace, and unwavering faith began to deeply influence my spiritual life. This book invites you into that same practice.

For years, I thought I knew Mary, or at least I thought I knew about her: the young woman in blue, the serene figure in nativity scenes, the silent presence in paintings, head bowed and hands folded. I'd grown up with that Mary, and like many people, I'd never thought to question whether stillness was the whole story. It wasn't.
The deeper I went through Scripture, through the world of first-century Judea, through conversations with biblical scholars, rabbis, priests, and religious leaders who generously shared their wisdom, the more I found a woman I didn't recognize but desperately wanted to know.
A girl who said yes to the impossible before having any idea what it would cost her. A mother who fled across borders with a price on her child's head. A woman who watched her community turn on her son and still refused to look away. A person of profound faith who also asked hard questions, felt real fear, and sometimes didn't understand what God was doing.
